For one of two lots to be developed on the outskirts of Sevenum, a young family asked for a design for their new detached home to be built.
The structure and layout of the house follows the desire to build a future-proof home with the master bedroom and bathroom on the first floor. Therefore, the house has more volume and floor area on the first floor than on the upper floors. The design consists of a compact two-story main building capped with a hipped roof. To both the left and right, flat-roofed annexes are placed against the main building.
In the architecture of the house, a distinction is made in color and material use and appearance between the main building and the annexes.
The main building has a massive character with high gable openings in the front facade. Two piers mark the entrance to the house. The main building is materialized in butt jointed masonry with recessed ribbon joints in a brown-gray brick. The hipped roof with a large roof overhang is finished with a black-gray flat ceramic tile. The use of color and materials in this way connects in a contemporary way to the existing surrounding buildings.
To give the house more width and appearance with the additions, the flat roof is emphasized as a horizontal band. On the street side in the form of a carport and roof overhang and at the rear as a terrace roof and fixed awning in place of the glass doors overlooking the garden and landscape.
The low-rise is materialized distinctively from the main building with white stucco and façade surfaces with vertical wooden façade sections and slats.
The spacious roof overhangs, the window frames set deeper into the façade and the patio cover at the rear of the house function as permanent sun protection. This keeps the energy use for summer cooling low without obstructing the view of the surrounding garden.
Thanks to the well-insulated building envelope, careful detailing and the choice of a heat pump with a closed ground source, the house already meets the BENG energy requirements with a small number of PV panels. With additional panels on the flat roof, the home’s energy use can be relatively easily energy-neutral in the future.
