For a beautifully situated Ruimte-voor-Ruimte plot in the Brabant countryside, clients asked us to design a detached house. In doing so, they expressed ambitions regarding the energy efficiency and sustainability of their home.
In the immediate vicinity of the site are several traditional long-gabled farmhouses. These farms were traditionally provided with a saddleback roof on the main volume and a so-called ‘annex’ at the rear, a low part of the farm with a slight roof slope containing mostly subordinate functions from the farm program.
The long façades parallel to the road, the unambiguous roof shape, the characteristic annex and a clear articulation make the long-gabled farmhouse a recognizable building type in the East Brabant landscape.
The design of the house builds on tradition with a contemporary interpretation of these characteristics. The elongated main volume is parallel to the road and has a gable roof. At the sides and rear of the house, a second volume, inspired by the lean-to, has been created. This volume with a slight roof slope embraces the main volume, as it were, and forms on the side walls a covered terrace and a carport with outdoor storage.
The house consists entirely of wood frame construction and is built on an extremely light Hectar foundation floor with steel fiber concrete. The facades are clad with larch wood facade panels in three different widths.
The roofs consist of Isovlas purlin elements with ceramic tiles on the main volume and an aluminum fascia roof on the low volume. The two different roof finishes thus reinforce the two building parts in the design.
The high-quality insulating aluminum window frames feature triple-glazing with black plastic spacers. By also placing the window frames in the heart of the facade insulation and with additional air seals, heat losses and air leaks are minimized. Screen blinds on the façade openings to the east prevent the house from heating up too much in summer due to the early low morning sun. In addition, windows in both first-floor end walls allow for good summer night ventilation.
