For a family I made a design for the renovation of their home in 1930s style in the Brandevoort district of Helmond. The existing house had an extension at the rear with a pantry and terrace roof.
Because the existing kitchen had very little daylight coming in because of the terrace roof and the small kitchen window, the focus for the clients was on the desire to create a spacious and light living kitchen with the renovation.
Because the flat roof and skylight were causing leaks, the design assumes the partial demolition of the existing addition and canopy.
The new addition has a clear design with two large glass fronts for daylight inside and views of the garden. In the largest facade is a double outward swinging door so that the outdoor terrace is also easily accessible from the kitchen.
Inside the house, too, things change. A cleverly positioned new passage from the entrance hall to the new kitchen at the rear makes the various rooms on the first floor much more functional and creates logical walking routes.
A major consideration in the new design was the amount of natural light. In the new situation, the existing dining room will become an intermediate room with a TV/game area. To prevent this in-between room from becoming too dark, research was done into the amount of daylight in the various living areas on the first floor.
This was done by modeling the design in specially made software that provided insight into the amount and intensity of daylight in each space.
Using the daylight simulation, different variants for skylights in the extension could be examined. This showed, for example, that a new skylight in the place of the current skylight, compared to skylights against the façade, brings considerably more light into the connecting room.
