For a client in Nuenen, in close collaboration with various design partners, a design was made for the renovation and expansion of a bungalow in the northern part of the village. A neighborhood with several detached 1960s bungalows formed the backdrop to this design brief.
Although the bungalow still had several original style-typical elements of the original design, the home no longer met today’s requirements. Also, some structural parts of the house were in need of replacement and upgrading. In addition, the client’s wish was to expand the bungalow with a garage/hobby room, a living kitchen and a new bedroom with en-suite bathroom.
Both the renovation of the existing bungalow and the newly designed extension were designed with care to preserve the concept of the original design as much as possible. The original house is characterized by a clear articulation consisting of masonry facade sections with glass and wooden parts in between. For the extension of the house this articulation is also applied. Thus, the new extension forms a whole with the existing house.
The energetic upgrading and preservation of the house consists of rebuilding the building envelope of the existing bungalow. In particular, the flat roof is optimally insulated, not only to prevent heat loss in winter but also heating in summer as much as possible. The existing cavity walls are rebuilt with high-quality insulation and the wooden first floor is replaced by a well-insulated concrete floor with low-temperature floor heating. The client himself, as integral consultant, is responsible for the installation concept and the associated installation design.
The architectural design of the home does not stand alone. In a simultaneous design process, the interior and garden were also designed. Interior designer Kim de Man drew the interior design and lighting plan, and Marjolein Zoon of ZO. Garden Design made the design for the garden around the house.
The planned start of construction is the fall of 2021 and more updates on construction will follow here.
