Residence SvdH | Veldhoven

At the Blauwven in the district De Kelen, the municipality of Veldhoven has issued 20 lots for self-building. For one of these lots, Joris Hoogstede Architectuur made a design for a contemporary detached house.

The dimensions and unusual shape of the lot presented challenges regarding the positioning of the house on the lot. After a sunlight study, together with the client it was decided to position the house parallel to the street. This would leave as much space as possible behind the house as a garden.

The house is designed as a clear two-story main mass with a spacious high attic under the gable roof. To the rear right, a one-story ground floor addition has been placed. This contains the living kitchen, utility room and storage room. The latter two spaces can be converted into a bedroom and bathroom if this is desirable in the context of lifespan.

The first floor plan is designed with the various functions (sitting/cooking/eating/working) staggered in relation to each other. This creates an open structure in which all functions are connected and still have their own spatial quality, partly due to constantly changing views of the garden around the house.

From the entrance hall a spacious staircase leads to the first floor. There you will find two bedrooms and a bathroom placed en-suite to the larger of the two bedrooms. An open staircase leads to the second floor where a third large bedroom with its own washroom is located. The structurally required roof truss is executed as a wooden truss so that the structure remains visible as an interior element. The large fully opening window provides an unobstructed view to the outside as the houses are positioned staggered in relation to each other.

The facade openings are placed deep in the brick facades. This creates an architecture with clear cut-outs from the main mass. Thereby, the entrance is particularized by a cut over two floors and a canopy at the front door.

The facades consist of a wild-cut masonry in a red-brown hand-form brick with an anthracite-colored set-back joint. The addition at the rear will be rendered in facade plaster. The pitched roof has flat ceramic tiles and has no roof overhangs so that the clear main form is reinforced. The flat roof will be prepared for the installation of a sedum roof so that the view from the bedrooms on the flat roof is green and rainwater is delayed to the separate sewer system.

The aluminum window frames are equipped with three-layer glazing. This not only achieves a higher insulation value, but also prevents cold traps due to the low-temperature floor heating near the glass. In addition, the three-layer glass provides additional sound insulation due to air traffic from nearby Eindhoven Airport.

A heat pump with closed ground source provides heating and cooling for the home. The ventilation system with heat recovery (WTW) provides ventilation in all rooms, with the shell of the house being designed to be as airtight as possible to keep the efficiency of the ventilation system as high as possible. Due to the high-quality insulation of the house, the three-layer glass and relatively compact installation design, the house scores well in terms of energy efficiency and the BENG requirements are easily met.
