This project concerns the design for the conversion of an existing house in the outskirts of Hegelsom. The home no longer met current requirements in terms of energy efficiency.
At the same time as improving the energy performance of the home’s facades, window frames and roof, the client also wanted to improve the home’s appearance. The earlier enlargement and elevation of the house was evident in the masonry facades, and the higher roof plane created an imbalance in the proportions of the house. Also, the usability and quality of the dormer added to the rear left much to be desired.
Because the client thoroughly renovated the inside of the house a few years back, the choice was made to insulate the building envelope on the outside. Not only is this the best way to insulate with as few cold bridges as possible, it also gives the opportunity to give the exterior of the home the new look you want.
The starting point for the post-insulation of the facade was to demolish the existing masonry exterior leaf and apply a good new insulation package after which a new facade could be bricked. Because the new wall construction is wider than before, the foundation also had to be adjusted accordingly.
Structural calculations were made to determine whether the existing roof structure would be suitable for installing new high-quality insulating roof panels so that the roof could also be insulated from the outside. At the front, high in the roof are two skylights that allow light to fall from the top of the stairs to the second floor.
Because the existing front door at the front of the house was no longer in use, a new front door was conceived in the right side wall that leads to the driveway with a garden path. This will give the home a clearly readable and functional front door again.
At the rear of the residence is an addition that projects past the house to the right. This addition is also included in the energy and aesthetic improvement.
A pergola structure will be installed on the left side wall for the purpose of a living terrace with outdoor fireplace. To restore some of the balance disturbed by the previously raised roof and to make the house optically wider again, a masonry garden wall with openings to the front garden was constructed on the left side wall.
