On the Strijpsebaan in Veldhoven at the end of 2018, one plot was still available for self-build. The clients requested a modern home with a contemporary architecture that stood out from the other homes on the street.
The house consists of two clearly recognizable parts. The main building consists of 2 layers with a roof and is built of dark red-brown brick. At the rear of the house is a 1-story extension that is executed in stucco and protrudes on both sides of the main building. Virtually all living functions are housed in the main volume of the house. The rear extension houses the sitting area with indoor fireplace and a covered outdoor area with outdoor fireplace. The fireplaces are housed in the chimney element at the rear of the house. To reinforce the height and vertical character of the house on the street side as well, a chimney element was used there as well.
The staggered placement of the sitting area, dining area and kitchen creates a diagonal in the floor plan with a strong spatial effect. Each room has its own place in the floor plan, but at the same time has an open connection with the adjacent rooms. Sitting area, dining area, kitchen and study are thus not living functions in separate rooms, but form a sequence of spaces, each with its own atmosphere and identity.
On the floors are the private quarters such as bedrooms and bathrooms. The bedrooms on the second floor are distinguished by their clear height under the roof.
The entrance to the house is characterized by a high glass facade behind which there is a void. The straight wooden covered staircase and the “bridge” through the void form connecting elements that reinforce the character of the void. Above the stairwell on the second floor, two skylights have been placed in the roof. Because the staircase to the second floor is designed as an open staircase, the light from the roof windows penetrates to the entrance hall on the first floor.
In order to maintain as much relationship as possible with the backyard from the living spaces, the sitting and dining areas are provided with large glass facades that include a sliding door. Because these glass surfaces face south, attention to shading is necessary to prevent overheating. The covered outdoor area and the roof overhang at the seating area act as a fixed sunshade. In addition, the home’s three-layer glass is sunproofed.
The PV panels that contribute to energy performance along with the heat pump were placed on the flat roof of the addition so that the appearance of the flat ceramic tiles could remain intact.
