A very characteristic and valuable part of the ensemble of Mattemburgh Estate is the walled kitchen garden built against the orangery. A monumental garden wall constructed in red brick encloses the kitchen garden containing the unique vegetable and herb beds, the greenhouse for growing annuals for the flower beds and the lei fruit growing on white wooden racks against the inside of the wall.
The original garden wall had three entrances, a main gate on the north side to the villa and gardener’s house, an informal gate on the west side and an entrance from the old orangery.
With the expansion of the orangerie by means of the new restaurant wing in the walled garden, the desire also arose for a new passageway on the east side to serve suppliers for the restaurant function.
The existing gates are not suitable for this purpose because of their dimensions, and by creating the new gate on the east side, the deliveries can take place close to the Antwerpsestraatweg and out of sight of visitors to the estate.
We considered the new garden gate to be part of the new building and architectural layer added to the rich history of the estate in 2017-2018. Therefore, the choice was made to execute the garden gate in the same design, materials and colors as the other additions to the estate that were realized.
In the aesthetic incorporation of the gate into the existing garden wall, the characteristic sloping rolling layer on top of the garden wall is continued as a line in put aluminum top rail of the portal. The handles of the gate were spared from the vertical slats so that no additional visible door hardware needed to be mounted on the gate. Electronically controlled access allows vendors to load and unload independently.
Concurrently with this project, a new restaurant wing and winter storage for tub plants realized.
